Rihanna and David LaChapelle Settle 'S&M' Video Plagiarism Lawsuit

October 19, 2011 /Photography News/  Rihanna has settled a lawsuit with fashion photographer David LaChapelle, who had claimed that her S&M video was "directly derived" from his pictures.

The suit claimed that eight of LaChapelle's images were copied in the S&M video directed by Melina Matsoukas, and the "composition, total concept, feel, tone, mood, theme, colours, props, settings, decors, wardrobe and lighting" mimicked his work.

Although LaChapelle asked for 1 million dollar in damages, the case has now been settled by Rihanna out of court for an undisclosed sum. David's publicist says he is "happy with the settlement."

While Rihanna's legal troubles with David LaChapelle may be over, the S&M video is also subject to legal action from Paris based photographer Philipp Paulus who claims the scene with Rihanna being stuck behind plastic wrap against a press room wall mirrors his Paperworld fashion editorial shot in August 2010.

  1. What a shame it is when an artist steals another artists work. I hope your getting paid Mr. LaChapelle!
